I Kissed A Giraffe and I Liked It

Today was for recuperation, both for us and for all the teachers and students at Compass School. We know that the hardworking and energetic Principal Annastacia Wanjiru and sewing teacher, Flora Ndunge, surely need a break after the day's information overload.

With a visit to the Giraffe Centre (Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife),  Jeannine's dreams came true, and she's been singing "I kissed a giraffe" all day. The rest of us tried to steal Kenata away from her, but he only had eyes for her (as long as she fed him pellets).

A Kiss is Just a Kiss

After visiting the giraffes, we headed to Nairobi Chapel for a rousing Kenyan interdenominational service. The singing, dancing, and live band was fabulous and the interactive trivia game (to make sure people had been listening to the previous weeks' sermons) was both engaging and amusing. The wonders of the English language were made clear when one respondent, asked to identify the plagues sent down on the Israelites, identified gee nats. The congregation laughed as the pastor said, "Yes, there were gnats." The man just laughed along and did not seem embarrassed. If you'd like to check out the eleven o'clock service we attended today, look for a link at www.nairobichapel.org.

After a very well-presented sermon, we headed to the Mediterraneo Restaurant for lunch. It was really good (and that's a big compliment coming from five people who live in the Italian restaurant capital of Canada). After some shopping therapy, we went to the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden to enjoy a relaxing couple of hours before meeting up with our Namuncha hosts, Sam (a Canada World Youth student who lived with Sylvie and her husband, Jim for three months last year - Sam is truly like a son to her) and his brother, Solomon Saitoti.  Solomon is such a dynamic leader!  He's ready for us, with gates and fence posts installed and a full itinerary of work and events for Monday, and four more days starting Friday.  In between we're taking a quick break for a side-trip to the Masai Mara.

We're all set for new adventures.
