Finally, after all our planning, money raising, organizing and packing, we are on our way. We left the Sault for Toronto yesterday afternoon and today we board the plane for a very, very long journey to Africa. The first leg, seven hours long, takes us as far as Frankfurt, Germany. After a four hour layover we board our second flight for an eight and a half hour trip to Nairobi. Here's hoping our adrenaline-charged excitement will over-ride the travel fatigue. I doubt we will be looking this fabulous upon our arrival in Africa.
We've already passed our first challenge. All of the six extra suitcases we packed, which are filled with goods for Africa, came as close to the fifty pound limit without going over as possible. Every single thing in those bags is important. They contain 166 Days for Girls kits, (click on the link to see how fabulous they are), school supplies, soccer uniforms, goat scarves, pillowcase dresses and lots of other important items. If you're wondering about the goat scarves, 38 individual people/groups have purchased goats for us to give to families in the Masai Village of Namuncha. Thankfully we are able to buy the goats there and didn't have to pack them. Can you even imagine that? Hopefully someone will take video of us as goat herders.
We're going to try to blog as much as we can during our journey but internet access is often sketchy and our long days may make it challenging to fit in. If you'd like to receive a copy of our posts by email just add your address to the box on the right sidebar that says "Follow by Email" and click on the submit button.
We would be remiss if we did not extend our deepest gratitude to all of you who have supported us. To our fellow members of our Tumaini Afrika SSM group who work tirelessly to raise money for all of our projects....we wish you could all be here to share in this adventure with us. We will work to represent you well. To all the members of the community of Sault Ste Marie and to our friends and family across the province who have supported us in our attempt to throw another starfish into the sea, Thank You! Thank You! And thank you again!
